From August 31 - September 2 2011, the Web Wars team hosted the conference Old Conflicts and New Media: Commemorating the Socialist Experience Online. Funded by HERA and co-funded by Bergen University's Future of Russian project, this conference united leading scholars and practitioners of post-Soviet online culture at Hotel Solstrand, not far from Bergen. Tackling a variety of geopolitical and digital settings (think Georgia, Russia, Poland, Rumania, or Facebook, chatfora, Twitter), their contributions all revolved around one central question: how are commemorations of the socialist experience mediated digitally?
This link takes you to the conference program, and you can read the original call for papers here. The abstracts of the conference papers, including those by our two keynote speakers -- political scientist Volodymyr Kulyk (Kyiv) and media expert Anna Reading (London/Sydney) -- are collected in the PDF file below this page; in addition, our conference output page leads you to Powerpoint presentations of (most of) the papers. In January 2012, we will add audio podcasts of all papers. |
